As someone who isn't an activist or a "banner carrier", I was thrust into activism with community partners that I never thought that I would be more than on a "Hey there" basis. Two months after I became Rector of St Stephen's Episcopal Church, the Pulse Night Club in Orlando massacre happened, and I was asked to speak pastorally to LGBTQ+ community in SLO who was thrust into fear and sadness even though 3,000mi away. You can see that here https://www.sanluisobispo.com/news/local/article83...

Less than a year later, a teacher wrote a letter in the school newsletter quoting the Bible disparaging LGBTQ+ students. I was asked to speak as a faith representative about what that meant - something that I 100% disagreed with. I was then asked to join a task force to address DEI in the schools and have been on that task force for 7 years.

I was then enticed to join the GALA Pride & Diversity Center, partly to make tiny steps to repair the relationship between the faith communities and the LGBTQ+ community.

While being in these spaces has often been uncomfortable, I have learned so much about the LGBTQ+ community and the challenges that they face - that they shouldn't have to in the 21C!! In California! All you have to do is check out Atascadero City Council meetings, Paso Robles School Board meetings, Arroyo Grande City Council meetings and a very recent County Board of Supervisors meeting to see that SLO County is not as inclusive and welcoming as we purport to be. And I'm bound by my Baptismal Covenant to respect the dignity of every human being. It's a challenge every day when I see and hear about what denigrating, dehumanizing things are being done to and said about the LGBTQ+ neighbors we are called to love as we love ourselves.

What I've learned while on the GALA Pride & Diversity Center Board, I have learned about the amazing services and programs they provide throughout SLO County. They are saving lives and empowering the marginalized to step into the light. As a community, we can't afford for those services to go away.

To be blunt: the GALA Pride & Diversity Center needs to shore up its funds, and I'm asking you to give a little or a lot to support them.

Join me in supporting real change. Let’s support good in the world and make a difference. Help me support The Gala Pride and Diversity Center so they can continue to empower people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions and unite the Central Coast Community.

Just a small donation will go a long way to helping me meet my goal for The Gala Pride and Diversity Center.
