The GALA Pride and Diversity Center is near and dear to my heart. Those of you know that know me, know that my personal history has had some pretty dark moments with drug abuse and bad decisions. I came out in 2009, at 36 years old. Many of the challenges I faced in life up to that point were because I had no support growing up as regards simply being me. I just was not accepted by may family or the community. I left SLO County to get my life back in shape in 2006, and moved back in 2022. I was excited to learn that an organization was here in SLO county that supports LGBTQ2S+ folks like me. There was nothing of the kind when I was a kid. I cannot help but think that if something like this had been available way back when, I may have had fewer challenges as a young man trying to figure my life out. I am passionate about making sure that the youth and people of all ages who identify somehow as LGBTQ2S+ will have a place and a community that helps them feel safe, and leave the shame and fear behind that prohibits many of us from living our lives fully.
